Spices were used in many different parts of the world. Because Europeans conquer many parts of the world, spices had been found from the homeland, and brought back to Europe. At the time, spices were very valuable. Europeans countries trade spices in Venice. Many countries came and trade spice around the city. This made Venice rich. The spice market still exist till today.
There were many different types of spices. Some of them can be used as medicines to heal or release pain. Some of them were used in food. Some of them can be used to make different smell release. Spices really change the world. Can you imagine eating food that has nothing but salt in it. No cinnamon, no pepper, no soy sauce. Spice change people's life style till today. Even though most of the people can't remember most of the names of spices, they are still important. Without spice, no one will know the amazing techniques Egyptians had on antiseptic_lots of these techniques needed spices.
Not just in European history, spices were also important in Asia history. Unlike Europeans, Asians found spices long time ago. Spices were use very different in Asia. They were used in many different cooking and medicines. Some of the spices medicines still exist in China today. Many spices trade in Asia were near the silk road.
Roman Empire were one of the main spice trading country in Europe. They found and used spice far early than rest of Europe. They trade mainly near the Mediterranean sea.

Cinnamon were also very common in today's world. I personally can stand the taste of cinnamon, but I have to agree that it is one of the most common spice in the United States.
